UNILINC Seminar - Library Services in the Indigenous Context: protocols, training, service

The Seminar aims to help Close the Gap when it comes to libraries and other information service delivery.
I was lucky enough to attend this friendly and informative seminar.

Grai was there and sends greetings to all. Grai and Lachlan are getting married next May. They have just signed the papers to buy a home near Macquarie Uni, and Lachlan is working as an archivist.

Many university libraries have a significant number of Indigenous students who could benefit from improved outreach programs.
From the latest census 0.6% of Sutherland Shire people are Indigenous, ie Aboriginal &/or Torres Strait Islander compared with the national average of 2.3%.
Census results for the Shire for Country of birth show numbers are similar for Chinese, Italian, Greek and South African people.

Kirinari Hostel at Sylvania, houses secondary students who attend our local high schools - check out this youtube video made by a couple of students in 2007.

Some dot points below that Sutherland Libraries might be able to use to encourage greater use of our resources.

.Be aware of and implement the ATSILIRN Protocols. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Library and Information Resources Network Protocols.

.Outreach to Aboriginal people in our community.

.Create relationships. Get out of the building, into the community.

.Attend activities such as NAIDOC and other events in your local community.

.Display our Reconciliation Statement.

.Develop Mentorships

.Beware of gatekeepers - ie one active, easy to contact person being used to gather and distribute information. Make sure information is getting out to the wider community.

.Check AIATSIS Thesauri for cataloguing and similar purposes - pathways are available under Place, language, subject.

.Employ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff.

Lines in the Sand - Hazelhurst Regional Art Gallery

Called into the the Hazelhurst Regional Gallery on Sunday arvo and spent some time making my way through the latest excellent exhibit Lines in the Sand.
Plenty to see and absorb.
While we were there we we lucky to catch Daphne Salt giving a talk on the history of Kurnell.

Congratulations library blogees

I am enjoying the other staff blogs - lots of talented, creative people. Congratulations to the competition winners, encouragement to everyone still struggling to find the time to explore the set tasks - so easy to get distracted and wander off into the endless opportunities for entertainment and enlightenment.
A little editing has replaced the original youtube video I posted from PETA - "Meet your meat" with a clip of Dan Sultan, a musician from Victoria. The video is not the professional style preferred by our task master, but a big crowd enjoyed the talent despite the heat.
Some of the other acts that made me happy to be at the Blue Mountains music festival even if I could only make it for one day included Jake Shimabukuro, Kate Miller-Heidke, Marlene Cummins (accompanied by Jim Conway), Kerrie Anne Cox and Tjupurru.

Fixed slide show

Had to fix my slideshow as some of C's photos got mixed in with mine. Possibly because we used the same keyword tag?

School project - Aboriginals

Dharawal : the story of the Dharawal speaking people of Southern Sydney : a collaborative work / by Les Bursill et al

At last, one easy source to help find out about the local Aboriginal people.

Task 8 Social networking

Had a look at some library My Space accounts.

Topeka and Shawnee Public Libraries.

Loved the video book/video reviews and the library related chats about books but found the "friends" personal ads a little disconcerting. I don't want to know that much about our customers.

Links to "friends" such as authors like Meg Cabot is more worthwhile in the Hennepin County Library

Has some good ads for teen books/videos (links weren't working).

Their blogs try hard but don't attract many comments although this doesn't mean that the promotion is ineffective.

Denver Evolver feels like it fits the target teen audience. It is a bit more creative than the previous two but the others are more like the comfortable library I know.

Crome Yellow / Aldous Huxley audio e-book

And now for something a little less confronting.
audio e-books.
Librivox Acoustical liberation of books in the public domain.
LibriVox volunteers record chapters of books in the public domain and release the audio files back onto the net. Our goal is to make all public domain books available as free audio books.
I have followed the option of downloading Crome Yellow/Aldous Huxley via I-tunes with the idea of listening to a chapter a day via an mp3 player.

Anyone who has seen earlier versions of my blog will be glad my embedded video has been replaced.
Please enjoy the soulful Dan Sultan - you should have been there.
